Saint Nicks Day

As a Modern Nomad, I love traditions and lore that center around Christmas. Saint Nicholas Day is one such tradition, and it’s celebrated on the morning of December 6. This holiday has evolved into many modern-day forms, but the traditional custom is to set shoes out the evening before St. Nick’s Day so they’ll be filled with little gifts and treats in the night. It’s a sweet holiday about giving to others, and we love to celebrate it with a twist.

Saint Nicks Day Stockings

Christmas stockings are a fun seasonal tradition; it’s a festive way to gift holiday items, typically I fill the stockings with candy, trinkets, small gifts or other fun items to surprise the kids. Once assembled, I leave the items near the doorstep.

Make it as simple or as elaborate as you wish; this can be used as an alternative to Christmas morning stockings or can be added to your existing Christmas traditions for years to come.

Create the Magic

The great thing about Saint Nicks Day Stockings is that there’s no right or wrong way to make them; how you choose to create them is totally up to you. You can choose to follow a specific theme or create a random stocking filled with all of your kids favorite things. Remember to have fun with the process and get creative!

Source Your Materials

What Should You Include?

While there are many possible ways to make Saint Nicks Day memorable, there are a few common items you’ll want to have on hand before you start. Remember that there is no specific cost you need to spend; these items can be as inexpensive or as luxurious as you want them to be. The items include:

  • A base: Christmas stockings, shoes, basket, pail, gift bag or other container to hold the gifts

  • Treats: these can be store-bought or homemade

  • Decorations: paper shreds, stickers, tissue paper, silly string

  • Small games or trinkets

  • Theme-specific items

  • Christmas printables

Find Your Base

The first step I will use in creating a Christmas stocking for Saint Nicks Day is to find a container that will hold all of the goodies. This does not need to be elaborate or expensive; you can choose something like Christmas stocking that you typically use, shoes, a plastic bin, or pail from your local discount store, or you can even choose to decorate a fun gift bag.

Have Fun Decorating

The fun part of creating is the decorating process! Depending on the theme that you choose, you can create a traditional, fun or even fancy stocking.

Try decorating your stocking with tissue paper to give it a festive look, or add ribbon for a more whimsical appearance.

Fill It Up

Once you’ve decorated your container, it’s time to fill it up with all the goodies you want to give the recipient. Remember that if you have any heavy items, these should be situated toward the bottom, and any delicate or breakable items should be more toward the top.

Set it out

Saint Nick comes on the night of December 5th. Once your stocking is complete, it’s time to set it out. Traditionally, we leave the treats near the entryway for the kids to find.

I hope you enjoyed this little tradition we do in our family. Saint Nicks Day is a great way to ring in the Holiday season. Thank you so much for following along. Be sure to check out my instagram page here to see what other holiday traditions we will encounter this season.
